Mexico’s Trucker Stoppage Puts Border Freight on Alert
Mexican cargo-transport groups began an indefinite national stoppage Monday, citing highway insecurity, cargo theft, extortion, poor road conditions, towing costs, and proposed changes to fiscal incentives. Demonstrations started October 26 in Mexico City and key industrial and border markets, including Monterrey, Reynosa, Tijuana, and Nuevo Laredo. mykn.kuehne-nagel
CANACAR reported 44 mobilizations across 30 states, with organizers describing shoulder parking, partial lane occupation, and slow-moving convoys instead of full road closures. Early reports indicated trucks staged near Nuevo Laredo without blocking all traffic, while other reports confirmed partial lane obstruction near Mexico City and along the Nuevo Laredo corridor. Mexico’s Interior Ministry stated most transport organizations had agreed to talks, but CANACAR continued its call for action, leaving the duration and impact on commercial crossings uncertain.
Why it matters: Cross-border operations should view this as an active capacity and transit-time risk, not a confirmed nationwide border shutdown. Shippers of automotive, industrial, food, and time-sensitive freight should verify pickup status before tendering, monitor Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa, and add recovery time to schedules. A prolonged stoppage could tighten drayage and linehaul capacity even if international bridges stay open.
