Diesel Breaks the Record — Fuel Is Back at the Center of Every Trucking Conversation
The national DOE/EIA benchmark price for on-highway diesel increased by 31.8 cents in a single week to $6.285 per gallon for the week ending September 14, which was the highest figure in the record series. This means that diesel is now $2.546 higher than it was for the same week last year, with California's price reaching $8.039 per gallon and the Gulf Coast—still the cheapest area—remaining at an average of $6.027. When a reference fuel economy of 6.5 miles per gallon is taken into account, the national benchmark amounts to approximately 96.7 cents per mile before labour, equipment, insurance or maintenance are factored in.
